In Focus: The Top 5 Sure Fire Books for Personal Care Agency Owners

Man sitting in outdoors reading a book. He has a stack of books to his left and a plant to his right to illustrate the article on Books for Home Care Agencies

This week’s article steps outside the box a little bit. It does, however, feature my favorite hobby, reading. Personal care agency owners and operators are always looking for ways to improve their business. That’s why I wanted to share some of my favorite business-themed books with you. Each of the books below helped to improve how I interacted with the admins at my agency.

  1. Start with Why – by Simon Sinek
  2. Fired Up! Selling, Great Quotes to Inspire, Energize, Succeed – by Ray Bard
  3. Death by Meeting – by Patrick Lencioni
  4. Under New Management – by David Burkus
  5. How to be a Great Boss – by Wickman and Boer

I have read each of these books when working in the home care space. While none are specifically tailored to senior care, they all touch on points that are relevant to all business models. I started this list with one of my favorite books, “Start with Why”. Mr. Sinek’s book is one of my favorites! I have actually read it more than once. The author asks you what your why is, for doing what you do. This inspired me to get out pen and paper and write down my “why” for being in the senior care industry.

For the second book on our list, I used the quotes in it during both our sales meetings and our wider staff meetings. Sometimes we all need a little bit of inspiration and a pick-me-up to get us back on track. “Death by Meeting” is the most recent book that I’ve read. Its topic as you may guess is meetings. We all know those meetings that we dread going to. This book endeavors to change our minds about meetings and instead to take them seriously. It calls us to put effort into them and engage with our colleagues during them.

Number four on our list is a book that I read when I was promoted from Director of Sales and Marketing to Director of Operations. I sought this book out for guidance on handling a larger role within the agency. Finally, I included Geno Wickman’s and Rene Boer’s  “How to Be a Great Boss”. I also sought out this book as a newly minted Director of Operations, understanding that managing an agency was going to be more challenging than running a sales team.
